Hey Amarillo neighbors — Isabella Diaz here! If you’re looking for something fun to do around town or planning a weekend adventure, here are some of my favorite timeless items on the Things To Do beat. Whether you want nature, art, or just a place to unwind, there’s no shortage of spots in and around the city.
Get Outdoors & Explore Nature
Palo Duro Canyon State Park
About half an hour from Amarillo, Palo Duro Canyon is a must for any nature lover. Hike the trails, explore canyon overlooks, ride horseback, or stay overnight in a cabin. The scenery is unforgettable and changes with the light — sunrise and sunset are especially magical.
Wildcat Bluff Nature Center
Right in our backyard, this nature center spans rugged prairie and canyon rim terrain along the Canadian River. There are walking trails, birdwatching, and plenty of quiet spots to escape the city hustle.
Parks, Lakes & Recreation Within the City
Amarillo Parks & Recreation manages over 50 parks totaling ≈2,400 acres. Amenities include splash pads, fishing lakes, pools, playgrounds, golf courses, and sports complexes. Some favorites: Thompson Park & Zoo, Ross Rogers Golf Complex, and the many neighborhood green spaces perfect for a picnic or a stroll.
Quirky Roads & Cultural Corners
Historic Route 66 District
Stroll along SW 6th Avenue through antique stores, cozy cafes, murals, and live music venues. GoldenLight Café is a local legend here, and the Nat—once a dance hall, now an antiques market—is a great stop for one-of-a-kind finds.
Cadillac Ranch & Roadside Art
Painted cars half-buried in a pasture, interactive art installations, and vibrant public sculptures make these roadside stops feel like part art gallery, part playground. Great places for photos, or just to soak up local character.
Museums & Discovery Centers
Check out the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum for exhibits about early settlers, fossils, oil history, and native cultures. The American Quarter Horse Association Museum celebrates a breed that helped shape the West. For younger explorers (or young at heart), the Don Harrington Discovery Center offers hands-on science exhibits and a planetarium.
Weekend Itinerary Ideas
Option 1: Canyon Morning + City Afternoon
Wake early for a hike or horseback ride in Palo Duro Canyon, then return to town for lunch in the Route 66 district. Spend the afternoon browsing shops or museums, followed by dinner at a local steakhouse or barbecue joint.
Option 2: Family Fun Day
Start with a zoo visit and picnic at Thompson Park. Head to a splash pad or pool if it’s warm. Wrap up the day with ice cream and live music — many local venues host evening acts, especially in downtown and Route 66 areas.
Option 3: Culture & Coffee Crawl
Grab a brew and art at an independent café, wander through botanical gardens, hit a gallery or two, then catch a performance at one of Amarillo’s theater centers or concert halls.
Tips to Make the Most of Your Weekend
- Check weather and park alerts before heading out — Texas Panhandle days can surprise you with heat, wind, or storms.
- Go early for outdoor spots to avoid midday heat and crowds, especially in the canyon and at popular parks.
- Pace yourself — many attractions are spaced out, so give time for travel and downtime.
- Support local businesses: grab meals and coffee in smaller neighborhoods and boutique districts.
No matter what you choose, Amarillo’s mix of open skies, quirky charm, and welcoming energy means there’s always something to discover. Hope to bump into you out and about!
